21st Century MedEd: 3 Innovative Ways to Practice Hands-Only CPR

Here at AppClinic, our team is obsessed with learning about all the latest and greatest innovations in the world of healthcare and veterinary education. Today, we’re taking a closer look at some of the most innovative ways folks can pick up and practice their foundational CPR and basic life support skillsets outside of a traditional classroom setting. Each of the below entries details an inventive, outside-the-box approach to teaching hands-only CPR – check out our list and let us know what you think!

CPR Training Event

Mobile Tours/Training Events

What could possibly be better than learning how to perform hands-only CPR? Learning alongside your friends and family, of course! Each year, organizations across the United States host mass CPR training sessions, often alongside other popular occasions like state fairs and sporting events. Other initiatives like the American Heart Association and Anthem Foundation’s Hands-Only CPR Mobile Tour have successfully brought CPR training to more than 83,000 people across the country since 2012.

Hands-Only Kiosks

In-person events aren’t the only way to learn and practice CPR fundamentals, of course- in fact, learning how to save a life can happen anytime, anywhere thanks to the American Heart Association’s all-new Hands-Only CPR Training Kiosks. Following a successful pilot initiative in 2013, the American Heart Association and the Anthem Foundation have installed more than 30 hands-only CPR training kiosks in cities across the United States. Each kiosk features a brief “how to” video followed by a practice CPR session with a rubber torso. As users practice their new skill, the kiosk offers real-time feedback on the depth and rate of compressions as well as the user’s hand placement, offering a memorable, well-rounded introduction to the basics of CPR in about 5 minutes!

AppClinic - Saving Lives!

Digital Learning Tools

Of course, this wouldn’t be true AppClinic blog if we didn’t at least mention cutting-edge digital applications and games. Based on current American Heart Association Guidelines for chest compression and rhythm, AppClinic’s Saving Lives! helps players practice their foundational CPR and basic life support skillsets by administering CPR to a patient in a simulated emergency scenario. Digital learning tools like Saving Lives! deliver high-quality, research-backed CPR/AED practice to users in a easily accessible digital format, making it simple for anyone – healthcare practitioners and non-healthcare affiliated individuals alike – to brush up on resuscitation best practices and keep their first aid skills in shape.
